What are Bitcoin stocks?

The price of Bitcoin has largely rallied over the past month. A number of Bitcoin stocks — or companies that have business tied to the cryptocurrency — have followed suit. But given the on-a-whim price swings in the crypto world, finding the best stocks out of that bunch can be difficult.

For now, based solely on analysis, the best crypto stocks and Bitcoin stocks to buy or watch include Coinbase (COIN), MicroStrategy (MSTR), ProShares Bitcoin Strategy (BITO), a Bitcoin futures ETF, Bitfarms (BITF) and Riot Blockchain (RIOT). But investors should take caution.

Those stocks live and die by Bitcoin price gyrations. Some have troubled pasts. Other companies, like the trading platform Robinhood (HOOD), can sometimes function as crypto stocks. Square (SQ) et PayPal (PYPL) also allow their users to buy Bitcoin.

TOP 5 Best Bitcoin stocks

At the moment these are the best bitcoin stocks on the market. Scroll down and read more about them or buy bitcoin stocks at one of the best brokers on the market like eToro. Interested in another brokers where you can Bitcoin stocks? No problem, our overview is filled with a couple of good alternatives.

1. Coinbase (COIN)

Coinbase (COIN) focuses on three main areas: a cryptocurrency exchange for individual traders, merchant services that help businesses accept cryptocurrencies and an API that lets developers build their own cryptocurrency services.

Coinbase has made headlines in recent days after announcing support for Bitcoin Cash, the offshoot of its namesake asset, which held its much-hyped split

2. MicroStrategy (MSTR)

MicroStrategy focuses on cloud-based data services, including Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Software as a Service (SaaS) and other related cloud offerings. But it has sparked controversy overseas after the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission issued cease-and-desist letters to MicroStrategy, two of its divisions and a pair of its executives.

3. ProShares Bitcoin Strategy (BITO)

This ETF launched in 2017 and is designed to reflect the performance of bitcoin futures contracts available on U.S.-based exchanges Cboe Futures Exchange, operated by Cboe Global Markets Inc., and The Chicago Mercantile Exchange Inc., or CBOE, owned by CME Group Inc..

4. Bitfarms (BITO)

Bitfarms is one of Canada’s largest operators of cryptocurrency mining farms or facilities that use vast amounts of electricity to solve complex mathematical problems in order to generate virtual currencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. The company receives power from Hydro-Quebec at about 5 cents per kilowatt hour.

Other Canadian operators like HIVE Blockchain Technologies Ltd., Hut 8 Mining Corp. and QuadrigaCX also receive power at this rate, according to Alex Stojicevic, chief marketing officer of Bitfarms.

5. RIOT Blockchain (RIOT)

RIOT Blockchain (RIOT) is dedicated entirely to cryptocurrency mining by using software designed for video game systems like Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 4 or Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox One to process transactions in real time.

It can also be used on PCs and servers to mine Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap. Riot Blockchain has produced returns of more than 1,000% since adopting its name change last October.

Not all bitcoin stocks are the same

Some, such as Riot Blockchain (RIOT), are in the business of mining Bitcoin. Some, like MicroStrategy, simply buy Bitcoin, giving investors a way to play the cryptocurrency on the major exchanges.

  • The rise of Bitcoin ETFs may make such companies that buy Bitcoin less appealing. Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) has filed to transition into a spot Bitcoin ETF.
  • Bitcoin miners and buyers are directly tied to Bitcoin and the cryptocurrencies they hold. Other Bitcoin stocks serve as cryptocurrency’s financial plumbing. Silvergate Capital (SI) is known as a “crypto bank” and runs a digital-currency exchange platform.

Coinbase is a leading Bitcoin and cryptocurrency exchange, and makes money from fees on transactions. But the companies’ stock prices are still significantly affected by the day-to-day fluctuations of Bitcoin and other crypto prices.

Questions fréquemment posées

The high liquidity associated with bitcoin makes it a great investment vessel if you’re looking for short-term profit. Digital currencies may also be a long-term investment due to their high market demand. Lower inflation risk.

Big financial institutions have made their own predictions, as well, with JPMorgan predicting a long-term high of $146,000 and Bloomberg predicting it could hit $400,000 by 2022.

Even though Bitcoin is virtual and can’t be touched, it is certainly real. Bitcoin has been around for more than a decade and the system has proved itself to be robust. The computer code that runs the system, moreover, is open source and can be downloaded and analyzed by anybody for bugs or evidence of nefarious intent. Of course, fraudsters may attempt to swindle people out of their Bitcoin or hack sites such as crypto exchanges, but these are flaws in human behavior or third-party applications and not in Bitcoin itself.

Bitcoin’s price has risen exponentially in just over a decade, from less than $1 in 2011 to more than $68,000 as of November 2021. Its value is derived from several sources, including its relative scarcity, market demand, and marginal cost of production. Thus, even though it is intangible, Bitcoin commands a high valuation, with a total market cap of $1.11 trillion as of November 2021.

There are a couple of advantages of using Bitcoin:

  • Accessibility and Liquidity. One of the biggest advantages of cryptocurrency is it often sees no borders, and Bitcoin is no exception
  • User Anonymity and Transparency
  • Independence From Central Authority
  • High Return Potential
  • Volatility
  • No Government Regulations
  • Irreversible
  • Limited Use

The cryptocurrency market is now worth more than $3 trillion.

We’ve seen that with Bitcoin ETFs, the ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO), which was the first to launch now holds over a billion in assets. That’s a very fast ramp up for a new fund. However, we now also have the VanEck Bitcoin Strategy ETF (XBTF) and the Valkyrie Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BTF).
